Commentary: Will Obama Serve Another Term?

The 2008 presidential election will always be known as a historical election. I remember the day I was standing in Grant Park in Chicago, waiting to see who the next president of the United Stated would be.

With millions of the soon-to-be President Obama supporters standing around me, we all knew history was about to be made. One of the big screens was broadcasting CNN live showing each state the candidates had won. Everyone was waiting, holding their breath––no one took their eyes off the screen. About two minutes later, the screen displayed Barak Obama’s picture as the next president of the United States.

President Obama has been in office for two years now. He has made major changes: getting healthcare for everyone and bringing troops back from Afghanistan. When President Obama first entered into the office of President, the country was enduring a recession and many people were losing their jobs. Also, many college students could no long afford to pay for school.

Healthcare has been a big issue in America. Former presidents, like Bill Clinton for example, tried to make healthcare bills but were never successful. Many people are forgetting the main point of the healthcare bill: to bring affordable healthcare to all people. Imagine the many families who could get sick, and not be able to afford to take their children to a doctor. If the children had to stay in the hospital, they can’t pay the bill. According to the Foundation for Health Coverage Education, “If a family without insurance brings a child with a serious medical problem to the hospital, for example, the emergency room staff provides care with the expectation of being reimbursed by the state under a process called retroactive enrollment.”

Many people are also forgetting that President Obama came into office during a recession. Wall Street had taken a tumble, people could not afford to pay their home mortgages, and many of the homes were going into foreclosure. He did give many banks and companies bailout money, and unfortunately some of the companies did not use the money to help their companies. Many of the companies had big parties, with celebrities as performers. CEOs also gave bonuses to employees, etc. Once President Obama found out that some companies were misspending the bailout money, he ordered all the companies to show what they were doing with the money. According to the U.S. Department Of The Treasury, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) provided crucial assistance to small businesses, community banks, American automakers, and struggling homeowners.

Many celebrities supported Obama during his election run. They worked on his hotline, calling different people to make sure their voting for him. They also helped him raise money for his campaign. These same celebrities like to talk down about the President every chance they get. Many say he needs to do better. If they had taken notice, they’d realize that since he’s been in office, he has done more, in my opinion, than former President Bush did during his entire presidency. Some people need to also take a look at, and a listen to, the President’s speeches. In all his speeches he’s talking about his changes he has made.

I do believe that in 2012, America will re-elect President Obama. He needs more time to make more changes.
